MILWAUKEE/EWORLDWIRE/Oct. 9, 2007 — A new Web site dedicated to fighting Internet scams launched this month. Report Scam 24 7 formed to battle those who would take advantage of and cheat Internet surfers.
The Internet Community now has the opportunity to join together and crush this problem. “By becoming Internet Crime Fighters, our members will flood the e-mails of all companies and individuals who are running a scam until
they are shut down,” said Douglas Weare, spokesman for Report Scam 24 7. “By flooding their emails, they will not be able to tell which e-mail is from their next victim. If they open a different e-mail address and spam again, our members will know and again we will shut them down.”
Report Scam 24 7 has a forum where users can file their story and alert others to scams. Report Scam 24 7 then investigates the claims of the scam and works with the victims towards restitution. Up until now, the scam companies have had the upper hand as there were few resources for help.
According to the federal governments Web site, (ic3.gov) in 2006, $198,440,000 was reported in loss due to scams. It is believed that the majority of people do not report their loss. Unfortunately, people are often embarrassed or ashamed of falling prey to these schemes.
The most prevalent scams occurring today are usually under the following categories: promotional, educational, grant, identity theft, credit card, data entry and even loans to friends and relatives. Perhaps the most infamous scam is the Nigerian scam which has been rampant for several years. Nigerian scams typically involve some form of request for assistance in aiding someone to help move money out of the country. In return for help, they promise that there will be a financial benefit. In some cases, the victim receives bank drafts, money orders or traveler checks, which all turn out to be counterfeit. Once these documents are processed, they are returned, and the individual who cashed them are responsible for the entire bill plus bank fees and could face possible arrest.
Law enforcement is overwhelmed. They simply do not have the manpower to put a stop to all the liars and cheats. “It is time for the Internet Community to police themselves. At the present rate, if something is not
done, within the next five years there will be more scam sites than legitimate ones,” stated Weare.
“While this new site will not stop all Internet scams and rip offs, Report Scam 24 7 will help reduce the amount of people getting scammed and ripped off by informing the public and spreading awareness.”
Report Scam 24 7 is a free service available worldwide. “Let’s crush these scam artists and rip-offs now.”
